Did You Know?
Almost everyone has at least heard of Dr. Seuss, but do you know his real name or why he used a pen name in the first place? The man we know as Dr. Seuss was born on March 2nd, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts as Theodor Seuss Geisel. At age 18, he began attending Dartmouth College, and became the Editor-In-Chief for the college's humor magazine. After he and a friend were caught drinking in a dorm room (this was during Prohibition when it was illegal to consume alcohol), he was "removed" from the magazine's staff. He still wrote for the publication under the pseudonym "Seuss." After finishing his degree at Dartmouth, he attended the University of Oxford in pursuit of a Ph.D in English Literature. He never did complete his doctorate degree; instead, he dropped out and began working as an author and illustrator. He wrote and illustrated 44 children's books during his career.
