Mock Pewter Floral Butterfly Card

Time for a card with a vintage feeling! The Mock Pewter Floral Butterfly Card features a metallic finish and a unique technique. Take this homemade greeting card from ordinary to extraordinary when you use aluminum foil to make the central motif. The butterfly embellishment is absolutely stunning! Materials for Making the Mock Pewter Embellishment:

  • Provided Butterfly Pattern
  • Any Leftover Cardstock Sized 4” X 4”
  • Aluminium Foil
  • Thin White Twine
  • Light Brown and Black Wax Shoe Polish
  • Dull Pencil
  • Clear-drying Gel Glue (Such as Bostik Clear Gel)
  • Glue Stick
  • Cotton Q-Tips / Earbuds
  • Revlon Flex Flexi Natural Hold Hairspray


Instructions for Making the Mock Pewter Embellishment:

1. Trace the butterfly onto the cardstock.

2. Spread glue onto the butterfly’s outline and cover the butterfly’s outline with pieces of twine. Allow to dry thoroughly.

3. Cut a piece of foil slightly larger than the cardstock with the butterfly.

4. Use the glue stick to apply glue to the cardstock. Use Q-tips / earbuds to apply glue all around and in between the twine.

5. Press the foil on top of the cardstock and use your finger to gently press it down. Fold the overlapping edges over to the back of the cardstock, so that the cardstock will be neatly covered with the foil.

6. Use a cotton earbud to gently press the foil down around the twine so that the outline of the butterfly will become clearer.

7. Use a dull pencil to draw some detail to the butterfly’s wings and to give the butterfly two antennae. Also use the same pencil to draw some detail on the background.

8. Use earbuds and the wax shoe polish to add some detail to the embellishment. The polish will settle into the added grooves to highlight the detail you have drawn onto the butterfly, and give the embellishment an aged look.

9. Spray the embellishment with the hairspray and allow to dry.

 

Materials for Preparing the Lace:

  • 7” Strip of 1” Wide Silver Metal Lace
  • Brown Acrylic Paint
  • Liquid Black Shoe Polish
  • Quick-drying Clear Matte Spray Varnish
  • Paintbrush
     

Instructions for Preparing the Lace:

1. Give the strip of metal lace an uneven wash with the brown acrylic paint and allow to dry thoroughly.

2. Highlight some areas with the black liquid shoe polish and allow to dry again.

3. Spray the lace with the varnish and allow to dry. Remember to work in a well-ventilated area when using the varnish.

Materials for Making the Card:

  • 11” x 5.4” Vanilla Colored Cardstock
  • 5.3” x 5.3” Cut from a Matching Floral Brocade Paper
  • The Mock Pewter Embellishment
  • The Metal Lace
  • One 2” Wide Silver Flower Cut from a Silver Guipure Lace Ribbon
  • One 1” Wide Golden Ribbon Rose
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Clear-drying Gel Glue (such as Bostik Clear Gel)


Instructions for Making the Card:

1. Score the vanilla cardstock in half to create a card sized 5.5 x 5.4”.

2. With the fold at the top, center and glue the piece cut from the brocade paper to the front of the card.

3. Glue the embellishment in place.

4. Glue the metal lace onto the bottom of the card and cut off any protruding edges.

5. Glue the silver and golden flowers in place.
